We are currently building a new home and with it come the decisions that need to be made about window coverings. Blinds, shutters, or draperies? If we do blinds, should they be horizontal or vertical? Wood blinds or a composite of some kind? Cords or wands? It seems like there is so much to consider when making a simple decision to cover your windows! And of course, the costs can be astronomical depending on what you choose.

So, imagine my surprise when looking at a model of our home and I realized there were more windows than I had originally counted per the house plan! Now, most people would not complain about something like this. Yeah! More windows, which means more light! And then there is me, the budget oriented tight-wad. My thoughts were, “More windows to cover? Oh no! This correlates into more money needed to purchase window coverings!” The other problem is that I am leaning towards shutters on the house, which means even more money on window coverings. See previous article on shutters.

So, what is a girl to do with champagne taste on a beer budget? (So to speak of course—I’m not a drinker.) The solution that I’ve come up with so far, is to put shutters on the front of the house and blinds on the back, or maybe even just cheap curtains until I can change each one out for a shutter.

No final decision has been made as of yet. I’ll keep you posted when that actually happens.

Recently we sold our home and signed a contract to build a new home. While thinking about window coverings, a few thoughts came to mind. Should I put up curtains, blinds and curtains, or shutters, shutters and curtains? Curtains are nice, easy to clean, but can be just as expensive if not more expensive, than blinds. Besides, they could fade. Blinds are nice, somewhat more expensive, but last a long time but can be a pain to clean! Shutters are probably all of the above…minus the fading that curtains can do, but there is something else shutters have that blinds and curtains do not. Shutters give a more elegant, classy feel—more sophisticated.

While driving through various neighborhoods, I noticed how even some of the older homes seemed so much nicer if they had shutters on their windows instead of blinds or curtains. Last week, I was visiting with friends in a $650k home and noticed that shutters were the choice of window coverings. It was tastefully decorated and having shutters on the windows enhanced the beauty of the home.

Is it worth it? Some may say no, and others yes. It will certainly make your home feel more grand, and may be just the thing to help make your home stand out in the neighborhood. At this point in time, shutters is the clear choice for my next home.
